Not sure if it is urgent?

Three quick questions and we will tell you what to do next.

  • Is anything sparking, smoking, or hot to touch? Treat this as an emergency. If it is safe, switch off at the main switch, keep everyone clear, and call us now. If there is fire, call 000 first.
  • Is the whole house without power? Check whether your neighbours are out too. If it is only your house, call us and we will talk you through it on the phone.
  • Does a safety switch keep tripping? Usually not an emergency. Unplug the appliances on that circuit and book a visit. We will find the fault and explain it before fixing anything.

Know your switchboard before you need to

Most callouts start with someone staring at the switchboard. Tap any switch to see what it does and what a trip means. Press T on a safety switch to test it, the way you should every three months.

A typical home switchboard

A main switch, two safety switches, and a circuit breaker for each part of the house. Yours may be laid out differently, and if it still has ceramic fuses it is overdue for an upgrade.

Main switch

Turns off every circuit in the house at once.

If it trips: Switch this off first if anything is sparking, smoking or hot, and only if it is safe to reach.

Safety switch 1

A safety switch (RCD) watches the circuits below it and cuts power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, which is what happens when someone gets a shock.

If it trips: If it trips, something on its circuits has a fault. Unplug everything on those circuits, reset it, then plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit.

Lights

All the light fittings in the house.

If it trips: A trip often means a blown globe or a failed downlight driver.

Power, kitchen

Kitchen power points: kettle, toaster, microwave.

If it trips: Too many heating appliances at once, or a faulty one. Kettles are a common cause.

Power, bedrooms

Bedroom and living room power points.

If it trips: Look for a damaged cord or a cheap charger.

Safety switch 2

A second safety switch, so one fault does not black out the whole house.

If it trips: Same as the first: unplug, reset, and add things back one at a time.

Oven and cooktop

A dedicated circuit for the oven and cooktop.

If it trips: Often a failed element. Leave it off and book a visit.

Air conditioning

A dedicated circuit for the split system.

If it trips: Usually a compressor or fan fault. Leave it off and book a visit.

Hot water

The hot water system, often on off-peak tariff.

If it trips: A failed element or thermostat. No hot water plus a tripped breaker means call us.

Common questions

How much is a callout?

We tell you the callout fee on the phone, before we leave. Any repair is quoted and agreed before work starts.

Do you work after hours?

Urgent callouts outside business hours are available by phone. Planned work happens Monday to Friday.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes. Every job finishes with testing, and you get a certificate of testing and safety for your records or your rental agent.

Do my smoke alarms need replacing?

If they are older than ten years, are not photoelectric, or are not interconnected, they will need upgrading before 1 January 2027.

Can you install an EV charger at my place?

Usually. We check your switchboard and supply first, then recommend the right charger and circuit for your home.
